O’Fashion Donuts

Every morning when there is a donut trip in the works, the excitement undeniable, as we are either going to a tried and true or on to a new experience.  O’Fashion Donuts was a new experience that overall did not disappoint.  The chocolate long john, from the first sight of it we knew there was not enough frosting on the top and our taste confirmed this.  The amount of dough used is substantial, which leaves a lot of room for icing on top.  Perhaps if the donut base was smaller and the same amount of frosting was used, this would be a much better rated donut.

On a very strong positive note, the glazed donut was a huge standout.  This is the melt in your mouth donut that is something to write home about.  And no, we are not talking about Krispy Kreme, because O’Fashion Donuts glazed is far superior to Krispy Kreme.

Other donuts sampled were the old fashion glazed and the vanilla, sprinkled cake donut.  The old fashioned was fair, a bit heavy on the dough and shy on being sweet.  The vanilla donut had more sweetness, and a donut is supposed to be sweet, so it was a better donut.

Schnucks

The premier grocery store donut.  Schnucks makes a great donut.  The Schnucks donut is not a mediocre grocery store bakery product to use as a baseline.  The Schnucks donut significantly raises the standard.  A donut ranked below a Schnucks donut does not mean it is a bad donut, it is just that Schnucks makes a great donut.

The Schnucks donut is for everyone, not too much or too little of anything.  The chocolate long john looks nice and big, the coloring of both the chocolate and the dough is perfect.  The actual taste of the donut is a perfect example of a great donut to appeal to all sorts of donut eaters.  The donut has great balance of chocolate to dough.  The dough is neither light or heavy, it gives a great base on which to apply some chocolate.

Another couple of great asides, Schnucks are everywhere in St. Louis, and the consistency of the donuts at the multiple stores I’ve been to is excellent.  Schnucks is a reliable stop for a great donut and more.

QuikTrip

QuikTrip, and what a quick trip it is, unless you happen to be getting gas as well.  First, we will talk about the all important donut, then we will discuss QuikTrip’s other positive benefits.  If you leave early in the morning to go on a road trip, QuikTrip is a great place to begin, whether or not you have already filled up your gas tank.

The chocolate donut has an excellent dough, with a perfect colored, healthy dose of delicious chocolate on top.  The abundance of chocolate icing is what places the QuikTrip donut above the Schnucks donut.

Now, while you are at QuikTrip, the friendly faces of employees, and combined product offering of gas and any other convenience store item you might want, make up for the fact that it is not just a donut store, and yes the employee will need to ring you up at the cash register to tell you what amount is owed, they haven’t , memorized every combination of orders there are.

QuikTrip, a quality donut, at a quality store, with other quality products.

John Donut Co

John Donut Co., it is unfortunate to say, but what a disappointment.  We don’t like to criticize, especially a local establishment that has probably been around for awhile – however, these donuts were almost not finished.  And the place wasn't even busy on a Saturday morning.

The chocolate donut – the chocolate is mediocre at best, and the rest of the donut is like the all the other donuts at John Donut Co., hard, dry, and overly deep fried.  Almost a terrible donut, definitely not the way to begin your day.  Which might be why John Donut Co. has non-normal donut shop hours, including late at night, and early, early in the morning.  I guess John Donut Co. is banking on the late night drinking crowd from Soulard that gets a hankering for late night, drunken donuts- hoping that after some heavy drinking, the customers tastes may not be quite as discerning as they regularly would be.

Donut Delight

If you never had a reason to visit Florissant, now you do.  Donut Delight is quite a treat and worth the trip if you do not live around the Florissant area.  They make delicious donuts that have a different flavor thanks to the unique, though tasty dough.

The donut – the chocolate donut is comparatively large in size, has just the right amount of chocolate (which is delicious and is rich in color) on top of Donut Delight’s unique dough.  The dough used is heavier and is moist.  It is not a cake donut, and is not too thick.  You could eat the dough plain and it would be like having a deliciously healthy breakfast, albeit, with a hint of butter.  The dough is rich, filling, and moist.

In addition to donuts, Donut Delight offers a full breakfast menu, including biscuits and gravy – which is a wonderful way to start the day.  Although this critic has not yet tried anything but the donuts, the expanded menu could be a useful ploy to get the less enthusiastic out to Donut Delight; or for those in the neighborhood, perhaps a good alternative to donuts every day.
